MESSMER RED ANGUS
Our Program
At Messmer Red Angus, we concentrated on the production of profitable seedstock with you the customer in mind. We emphasized calving ease, fertility, maternal traits, quiet disposition and performance with muscling on moderate frames. Also we recognized the added value that strong carcass characteristics have meant to our customers as their cattle passed on through the feeder-to-slaughter chain. We firmly believed that there was nothing more important than the maternal strength of our herd.
| We were very much a "hands on" operation in it's second generation of Red Angus production, having started in 1962. Our year began with synchronization and AIing of the yearling heifers in mid May, followed shortly thereafter with the AIing of individual selections from our cow herd. All females were then taken to seperately lotted summer pastures and exposed to selected performance herdsires. From then on it was twice a day (or more) drive through each pasture for visual inspection over the following 4-6 weeks. This proved to be an extremely adventurous time as we observed herdsires, dams and calves in various stages of interaction and growth.
| Calves were weaned in early fall and all were placed on a conditioning ration before being worked onto the customized bull or replacement heifer formulations.
| All bulls were developed on a growing ration with each animal given an equal opportunity to excell. Monthly weights and perfomance data were compiled with only the select being chosen for our Annual Production Sale - each spring at Stockmen's Livestock, Dickinson, ND.
